Biomass Combustion
(Continued from the Executive Summary page.)

This narrows the choice of combustion technology to one that can control the combustion temperature preventing slagging and fouling in the facility.

The system selected is a direct combustion turbine system that separates the combustion and cleaning functions from the turbines. The operating plant produces power and recovered waste heat in the form of hot exhaust gases. It is selected for the following reasons:
  1. It will accept a wide variety of lignocellulosic feedstock reduced to the size of sawdust.
  2. It will accept feedstock up to 40% moisture.
  3. The power plant is modular in design.
  4. Space requirement for the unit is less than 1/2 acre, excluding biomass preparation and storage areas.
  5. The unit can be shipped erected and operational.
  6. The basic module can be presented in two different versions:
        a. Open Cycle Plant (OCP)
            1) Generates electricity (5.8 mega watts) and thermal energy in the form of hot exhaust gases (700 degrees Farenheit).
        b. Combined Cycle Plant (CCP)
            1) Adds a Rankine Cycle generating plant to extract heat from exhaust gases of the primary generator. Electricity generation is expanded up to 9.6 MW (mega watts) for maximum power production.
  7. The unit is environmentally benign.
